Breakaway ASUU faction: CONUA, Confident in Students’ Loan Program
The Students’ Loan proposal of the administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received praise from the Congress of University Academics (CONUA). In a press release, the president of the
Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, president of the union that split from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), stated in a statement: “We are not in favor of tossing out the baby with the bathwater.
We are idealists who hope that the loan will enhance funds for the system, give the underprivileged access to higher education, and help to stabilize the academic calendar.
Sunmonu stated that because the program is new, there will be certain ambiguities in the legislation that must be clarified to benefit the students, and CONUA is prepared to work with the government to make the students’ loan program a success.
“As a Union, we are aware of the administration’s Renewed Hope agenda, and we accept their choice to take the extremely difficult steps necessary to bring about major politico-economic changes.
We also value your willingness to take the required steps to lessen the uncomfortable side effects of unavoidable difficult choices. CONUA expects that the administration will offer the visionary leadership necessary for the sustained and forward-thinking development of the whole country.
